Jeremy Saulnier casts Jeffrey Wright & Alexander Skarsgard for Hold the Dark

Director Jeremy Saulnier has already made a serious name for himself with the likes of BLUE RUIN and GREEN ROOM, and from the sound of it, his next film will be just as gripping. HOLD THE DARK, adapted from the book of the same name, follows a wolf-expert and biologist who is called in on account of wolves attacking and killing children, only to find himself entangled in some serious shit when a…

So, like most people with a pulse, I can't wait for the new GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film, especially after hearing about its "100% approval rating" during test screenings. And with a little under a month away from release, it's a little surprising we still haven't gotten into the usual advertising Blitzkrieg these types of films get yet.

HBO & WWE to bring a larger-than-life Andre the Giant biopic to the screen

Back in the day, I used to be all about the warriors and drama of the WWF. Hey folks, Harry here… There’s some very nice looking work here, I just rewatched the original Mamoru Oshii anime just two days ago… and it was at like 4 in the morning, and I’ve seen the film 5 times theatrically and about 20 times on Home Video and every time, I’m enraptured. Engaged. I want Anime to kickass in these adaptations. I mean, seriously – who wants a shit version of any of these. ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, this, that long gestating AKIRA movie…. The trailer definitely has me interested in seeing it, shit, I was always going to see it. But it still doesn’t quite have fully engaged for some hypnotic reason. Hope whatever that is goes away in the movie experience. C’mon, work!

I am – Hercules!!
Universal is said to be closing in on a new “Scarface” director following the departure late last month of Antoine Fuqua (“The Equalizer,” “Southpaw,” “The Magnificent Seven”).
The Coen Bros. have been hired to write a script loosely based on the 1932 and 1983 movies. “Boardwalk Empire” creator Terrence Winter (“The Soprnanos,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”) worked on the script before the Coens (“Unbroken,” “Bridge of Spies”) came aboard.
Diego Luna (“Rogue One”) is set to play the lead, a Mexican gangster in contemporary Los Angeles.
The Coens have a long history of writing and directing movies about criminals, including “Blood Simple,” “Raising Arizona,” “”Miller’s Crossing,” “Fargo,” “No Country For Old Men” and “Hail Caesar!”

Victoria Film Festival ’17 The Girl with All the Gifts Required One More Sacrifice on the Altar: A Film Review

Director: Colm McCarthy.

Writers: Mike Carey (novel), Mike Carey (screenplay)

Cast: Gemma Arterton, Dominique Tipper, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine.

The Girl with All the Gifts is one of the best zombie-styled films to come out of the United Kingdom, in quite awhile. Based on Mike Carey’s novel, this horror title brings the zombie action back to London, a la 28 Days Later (2001). This time, these fast moving fungal infected freaks are sensitive to smell, mostly. Very similar to the plotline of the PS4 game The Last of Us (2013), in both media spores are the danger of the day, infecting the brain. Helen, played by actress Gemma Arterton, plays the protective parent, this time around. Helen is also very naive, especially when compared with the character Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close). The Girl with All the Gifts asks a few moral questions: which is more important – humanity or the individual? This viewer never came to a consensus. But, fans of zombie or infectious flicks are encouraged…

Capone talks JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, HIGHLANDER, Franco Nero, and more with director Chad Stahelski
Read the full article on AICN

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here. I you may have gleaned from Quint’s interview earlier this week, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 director Chad Stahelski and stunt coordinator JJ Perry, this film is one of those rare instances when the sequel manages to grow and expand the material from the original film without simply relying on going bigger and louder. Instead, the world of John Wick is opened up to us. We learn what Wick’s life was like when he was the king of the assassins and where his life is going to be if the series continues (not in a good place, I promise you). I chatted at length with Stahelski a couple weeks ago, and we dug into the process of where to take Wick’s storyline from the first one. Many bad ideas were discarded, and what we’re left with is something that manages to be both finely polished and really ragged around the edges. If you need a reminder, Stahelski went from being a martial artist fighter to stunt performer in this mid-20s. His first big break came from doubling for Brandon Lee in THE CROW, and was instrumental in helping that film get finished after Lee’s tragic on-set death. He followed that up by doubling for Keanu Reeves in THE MATRIX and thus began a long-lasting friendship that draws a straight line to Stahelski getting his first break as a director on JOHN WICK after years of being a stunt performer and coordinator. Hey, folks. Capone in Chicago here, with a few films that are making their way into art houses or coming out in limited release around America this week (maybe even taking up one whole screen at a multiplex near you). Do your part to support these films, or at least the good ones… THE RED TURTLE The natural inclination after watching the Oscar-nominated, timeless, and slightly surrealistic THE RED TURTLE is to wonder what centuries-old mythology serves as its source material. In truth, this wordless story of a castaway on a deserted island came from the mind of the director, Michael Dudok de Wit, who won an Academy Award for his charcoal-drawn, 2000 animated short FATHER AND DAUGHTER. Turned into a screenplay by Pacale Ferran, THE RED TURTLE (Dudok de Wit’s first feature) has the feel of a plainly told, ancient fable that combines very human feelings of isolation, love and despair with more fantastical elements, including one involving a massive red turtle that turns into a female companion for our unnamed protagonist. Since there is no dialogue, the story gives us almost no background on how this man ended up on the sea in the first place, or who he was and what sort of life he lived before that. We’re shown a small handful of nightmarish sequences involving things he may have seen on his vessel, but we have no way of knowing if these are memories or warped distortions of a life that he

Read the full article on AICN

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. If you would have told me a couple years ago that The Chronicle of Riddick’s Thandie Newton was going to be in a Star Wars movie I would have set the whole world on fire in my despair.
Thankfully a little show called Westworld has come into my life and the world is safe because now I’ve gone from someone who just never felt a Thandie Newton performance to a real deal fan. I mean, there’s some unforgivable stuff in her filmography, but her work in Westworld is so damn nuanced and layered and flat out good that the thought of her returning to space and joining up with a young Han Solo in some capacity is actually an exciting one.
Variety broke the news that Thandie Newton was in talks to join the flick, currently shooting with Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Donald Glover as Lando, Woody Harrelson as who-the-fuck-knows-some-mentor-character-or-something, Emilia Clarke as ?????? and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as dunno-a-droid-I-think.
As is usual, we don’t know anything about the character Newton would play, but to me she’s at the top of her game right now, so bring on whatever it is.

Read the full article on AICN

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It’s been a pretty big news day and this exciting tidbit is something I don’t want to fall through the cracks. Jeremy Saulnier is one of the best filmmakers working right now. His last film, Green Room, is one of my favorites of 2016. His previous film, Blue Ruin, is likewise incredible, but for radically different reasons.
Any news of his next movie is good news and today we’ve heard that he’s cast a whole lotta people in it. THR says Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright, Iron Man 3’s James Badge Dale, True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard, Mad Max: Fury Road’s Riley Keough and up and comer James Bloor have all joined up for this thriller called HOLD THE DARK about an Alaskan town being set upon by wolves (no shit!).
Even more exciting is that the screenplay was written by longtime Saulnier collaborator (and local Austin sex legend) Macon Blair, who starred in Blue Ruin and had a small, but pivotal role in Green Room.
The flick starts shooting next month and it can’t get finished and in front of my eyes soon enough.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Ted Levine’s a badass. Let’s get that out there right now. He’s the very definition of essential character actor. He elevates everything he’s in just by being there. His voice, attitude, mannerisms and look all add up an unforgettable screen presence.
He sadly hasn’t been given the kinds of roles he enjoyed in the ’90s and early aughts, but it looks like JA Bayona is going to turn that around with his take on Jurassic World 2.
Variety is reporting that Levine has signed up to co-star with Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Rafe Spall, The Get Down’s Justice Smith and Toby Jones in the dinosaur sequel.
No word on the role, but as long as it doesn’t involve Levine trying to build a suit out of parkgoers we should be okay.
