Lloyd Kaufman Talks James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy

As part of an exclusive interview with Chimichanga Talk, Lloyd Kaufman spoke at length about his work in independent cinema, the importance of helping young filmmakers and concluded with his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Throughout his career, Kaufman has starred in numerous films including the critically acclaimed: The Battle for Love’s Return; a film that he wrote, produced and directed. Kaufman went on to co-write and co-produce Sugar Cookies with Oliver Stone, followed by the Israeli comedy: Big Gus What’s The Fuss?

In 1974, Kaufman and Michael Herz founded Troma Entertainment, a company focused on producing and distributing independent action and comedy films. The struggling filmmakers sought mainstream work to fund their passion, an event that led to Kaufman becoming a crew member for the 1976 classic: Rocky. Kaufman’s involvement in the production was so profound that it led to the film being edited on one of Troma’s flatbed machines.

Kaufman revealed to Chimichanga Talkthat he recently found lost behind the scenes footage of Rocky. This footage was a milestone in his career as it’s one of his first films that he has directed; an event that sparked his lifelong passion to help young, aspiring talent to break into the film industry including James Gunn.

James Gunn values the influence that Kaufman has had on his career; casting him in cameo roles in all of his films including the highly anticipated: Guardians of the Galaxy.
”He gave me a part and he took me to England and if you don’t blink, you’ll see me in Guardians of the Galaxy. In Rocky… I’m in there a few times, but you may miss me in Guardians of the Galaxy unless you’re very careful. I might get cut out.”

”I got cut out of Slither, James’ wonderful horror film, but I’m in Super and you can’t miss me there. I got a couple of lines and he’s been putting me in all of his movies. He’s a genius.”
