Before I mention any of the above pictures, the new movie poster for Man of Steel is beautiful and continues the theme of isolation.
Going by all of the images released so far, the central theme that I’m expecting in Man of Steel is Superman’s inability to fit in with the world around him. In the majority of the pictures, trailers and movie posters, Superman is a solitary figure that stands alone. There may be objects or people in the distance, but he is never connected with them, simply there interacting.
The city of Metropolis is often represented as being empty, remote and lifeless which continues the theme of detachment. The short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury keeps coming to mind.
I’m sure that many of us can relate to that theme. (I certainly can). If your different in any way be it through your thought process, your background, the way you look or your interests, no matter how hard to try to be a part of the world around you… it just doesn’t click.
With regards to Man of Steel, the latest news is that the film will run for 143 minutes. With almost two and a half hours of run time, I suspect we will see a lot of characterisation that will hopefully add depth and soul to the film and it’s characters.
