The trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives is well crafted… I’m actually struggling to think of how to describe it as anything other than stylistic crap with no substance.
It relies on incredible imagery and serves no other purpose that to say ‘look at how beautiful this movie is…’ There is little to no attempt made in order to delve into the story or the characters or to even attempt to make the trailer stand by itself.
Is the imagery in the trailer memorable?
Yes it is, but there isn’t anything you can really say about the actual trailer.
In regards to Only God Forgives, it basically looks like The Driver in Bangkok. This is partially down to the same director being involved in both projects, but directors have to step out of their comfort zone and deliver fresh material in their own style, opposed to recreating something they have already done.
That may turn out to be an unfair statement, however based on the trailer (which is supposed to be an eye-catching representation of the film’s contents) I doubt anyone could argue otherwise.
I think I would be more forgiving if Only God Forgives was a sequel to The Driver as it would keep a sense of continuity.Only God Forgives Red Band Trailer
I suppose that as I am slating the trailer for Only God Forgives, I should provide some alternatives that I think would work better.
I think something as basic as Ryan Gosling looking straight into the camera with his bloody, swollen face (as shown above) for ten to twenty seconds and to then to cut to a black screen with the title Only God Forgives, would grab an audience’s attention far more than the trailer above.
It’s shocking, different and gives away just as much as the trailer above does, however it would leave the viewer wishing they knew more about the story and the character. Why is he beaten up? Who beat him up? Why is he alive?
By presenting a trailer in the fashion it also amplifys the importance of the title Only God Forgives. It instantly tells the viewer that even if God forgave the man who attacked him, Ryan Gosling sure as fuck wont.
The association of The Driver would also be broken as you would be presenting a trailer unlike anything else.
