President of Lucasfilm and Overseer of all things Star Wars, Kathleen Kennedy, recently gave further insight on the proposed Star Wars Spin-Off films:
“George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, episode seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created. There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear,”
To add further speculation, published an article that suggests that Lawrence Kasdan is/was working on a script about the character Boba Fett. Unhappy with Boba Fett being established as a Clone, Kasdan’s script begins with the offspring of Jango Fett being killed by the film’s protagonist. Looking to turn his life around, the assassin steals Boba Fett’s armour and identity. While this may be a unique twist on an established Star Wars character, it is a common theme in American Westerns. However, should Latino Review be correct, then the Boba Fett Spin-Off film serves no purpose other than to appease diehard fans and to cash in on a redundant, yet popular character.
Being an optimist, I hope that Disney/Lucasfilm are secretly looking for a way to expand the Star Wars Universe by creating a new franchise set within the classic era. Styled after Sergio Leone’s trilogy, The Man With No Name, the Boba Fett franchise could expand upon the character’s role in the original Star Wars trilogy. Furthermore, the films could give the audience a completely different perspective on existing scenes and to add depth to incidental events including:
How Boba Fett is involved with Greedo and Jabba The Hutt finding Han Solo and The Millennium Falcon in Mos Eisley
How The Rebel Alliance escapes from Yavin
What Boba Fett was doing prior to arriving on Vader’s ship in The Empire Strikes Back
Learn more about the sting operation to capture Han Solo on Bespin Cloud City
Events between Episodes V and VI with a possible inclusion of Shadows of the Empire
Learn more about Jabba’s dancers, how they were enslaved and why they have a relationship with Boba Fett
The ramifications of Jabba’s death in the underworld
To finally conclude if Boba Fett survived The Sarlacc Pit.
While fans of the Star Wars Expanded Universe will be quick to note that many of the above topics have already been covered, Disney have stated that the existing EU will no longer be classed as canon. This was shortly followed by the revelation that Marvel Comics (a Disney company) will be taking over the rights to publish Star Wars comic-books. (from Dark Horse Comics) This is to ensure continuity between all of the departments involved in the Star Wars franchise..
Cynical fans may view Disney’s decision as a money grabbing opportunity that holds little regard to expanding the Star Wars franchise or giving purpose to the standalone films. However, I remain optimistic that this decision will be used to allow flexibility for events already covered by the Expanded Universe. This prevents a potential clash in canon, while granting Kasdan and future Spin-Off script writers the liberty to expand upon the events skipped over or ignored by the other films. Otherwise… what’s the point of making a Boba Fett Spin-Off movie?
